The Research Wing looks after forestry research in
the state. An officer of the rank of Chief Conservator of Forests supervises
the work of the Research Circle. The research activities are periodically
examined by an Advisory Committee at Directorate Level comprising Principal
Chief Conservator of Forests, West Bengal as Chairman; Managing Director
of West Bengal Forest Development Corporation, Chief Conservator of
Forests (Research &Development), Chief Conservator of Forests (West),
Chief Conservator of Forests (North), Chief Conservator of Forest, (Planning
& Monitoring) as members & Conservator of Forests, (Research)
as member secretary.
The main thrust in the field of forestry in the State is on the improvement
of forest trees and productivity of forests. Seed trees and seed stands
have been identified and Candidate plus trees have been selected as
best individuals for different species. Experiments have been carried
out successfully for many species to propagate the best selected trees
vegetatively through rooting of cuttings for production of clones.
Progeny tests are being done for number of species with a view to judging
critically the genetic quality or otherwise phenotypically selected
trees. In addition, attempts are also being made to improve forest quality
by introducing plant populations of different species from the source
external to the state.
Species introduction trial has been considered as another method of
improving the forest quality of the State. In this trial, species exotic
to this country are being introduced and propagated in suitable environment
and particularly where indigenous species fail to thrive.
Recently Silvicultural nurseries have been given special attention.
Modernization of nurseries
have been done by improved irrigation system using automated misting
apparatus and sprinkler to provide best facilities for clonal as well
as seedling propagation. Large-scale application of bio-fertilizer and
compost, which are eco-friendly, is also being considered for raising
field plantations. Organic manure is being preferred in place of inorganic
fertilizers and it has proved its efficacy in field trials
